The TRANSCENDENT Speaker Series highlights the latest research on key concussion topics to inform future research and clinical care. Meanwhile, TRANSCENDENT's Community Concussion Talks focus on sharing important information and insights from researchers, clinicians, community leaders and individuals with lived experience to help the community have the resources they need to support concussions.

The invisible injury: Managing headaches, sleep and mental health symptoms after a concussion

This Concussion Awareness Week webinar, co-hosted with Brain Injury Canada, discussed how to manage concussion symptoms. Speaker for this event included:

Sydney Low: Sydney is a registered counsellor, respite care provider, and expressive artist. As a concussion survivor, she integrates therapeutic knowledge with lived experience, specializing in creative approaches to trauma and brain injury recovery.

Dr. Roger Zemek: Dr. Roger Zemek is a pediatric emergency physician researcher. Dr. Zemek is also the lead of TRANSCENDENT, a partnership between the CHEO Research Institute, the Ontario Brain Institute, 360 Concussion Care and a network of researchers across Canada and the United States. Dr. Rébecca Robillard: Dr. Rébecca Robillard is the co-chair of the Canadian Sleep Research Consortium. She also directs clinical sleep research at University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) at The Royal and co-directs the sleep laboratory of the school of psychology at the University of Ottawa, where she is also an associate professor. Dr. Noah Silverberg: Dr. Silverberg completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Windsor and a clinical internship at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority Consortium. Before joining the UBC Department of Psychology in 2020, Dr. Silverberg worked as a staff psychologist at British Columbia’s tertiary rehabilitation hospital (GF Strong Rehab Centre) for over 10 years, where he also led an interdisciplinary brain injury research program as a clinician-scientist. Navigating Mental Health and Concussions:
Insights on Mindfulness, Mental Health Research and Lived Experience

Featuring two community advocates and a researcher with the TRANSCENDENT Concussion Research Program, this discussion highlighted the mental health challenges after a concussion and strategies for support someone navigate these experiences.

Supporting Older Adults with a Concussion:
Expert and Caregiver Perspectives
March 31, 2025, from 4-5 pm (EST)
This webinar explored the intersection of concussion, aging, and caregiving with expert insights and lived experiences. Featuring an advocate and caregiver, and a physician and researcher with the TRANSCENDENT Concussion Research Program, this discussion highlighted the challenges and strategies for supporting older adults with concussion.

Connecting Perspectives Insights on Intimate Partner Violence and Concussion through
Lived Experience and Expertise

We explored the intersection between Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and concussion. This event brought together diverse voices and recounts to shed light on the importance of IPV-related education and addressing IPV-related injuries.
